Outcomes Award: Bloomsburg University Academic Video Program Sees Major Growth with Facilities Enhancements

April 25, 2017

This is part of a continuing series highlighting the 2017 Enterprise Video Award finalists.

A Decade of Academic Video:

With nearly 10,000 students and more than 500 faculty members, Bloomsburg University is one of 14 public universities that make up the Pennsylvania state system of higher education.

Bloomsburg has been using Mediasite to streamline its video content management and pull together all user-generated content, recorded lectures and special events into one easy-to-manage system for the past decade.

Facilities Enhancements:

The academic video initiative isn’t slowing down, either.

“We continue to see the system grow,” said Asa Kelly, Video Production Specialist, Bloomsburg University.

In 2016, Kelly and his team completed enhancements to several facilities, including HDTV production studios, two classrooms with Mediasite technology and three large lecture halls with portable Mediasite Recorders.

Kelly and his team integrated Mediasite with the university’s broadcast facilities, allowing them to send professionally produced live events to Mediasite through fully-automated signal routing and control systems.

“This has greatly simplified our setup for large events like commencement and live sports, which often draw a national or international audience,” Kelly said.

The use of My Mediasite also continues to increase. All students and faculty have access to My Mediasite, which allows them to create, edit, share and manage user-generated videos from any device.

Continued Growth Year Over Year:

With ongoing use of My Mediasite for public speaking classes, lecture capture and flipped instruction, video content grew by 34 percent in 2016 over the prior year, and views increased by 94 percent.

“Our audience in 2016 alone nearly matched the cumulative audience of the previous six years,” Kelly said.

“With all of our user-generated content sources, one mobile recorder, five classroom integrated systems, a portable production system and our integrated studio production facilities, I’m sure we will continue to see the use of rich media grow in all four of our colleges as well as the student affairs division, administration, university marketing and the BU Foundation.”
