Missouri State University Students Succeed with Mediasite

April 21, 2016

When staff at Missouri State University’s Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL) introduced Mediasite in 2010, they wanted to do more than just deliver course content with Mediasite. They wanted faculty to look good doing it. So, FCTL created a professional studio.

“Our faculty saw an immediate increase in student engagement. Mediasite affords us an avenue to seamlessly distribute their content,” said Eric Taylor, FCTL videographer/editor.

Math professor Jennifer Pursley had never created an online class before being introduced to Mediasite.

“Mediasite allowed me to focus on the teaching side. All of the recording, the editing, the lighting, the audio, even where it’s stored and how it’s delivered to students — that big burden was taken away from me. All I had to do was focus on what I do, and that is teach math.”

She said her online class sometimes outperforms her face-to-face students.

“Mediasite allows an avenue that looks very professional, and in this digital age, our students really expect that. Mediasite is probably my favorite resource here on campus,” she said.

For history professor Eric Nelson, the question has always been “How could I speak to my students while they were reading their textbooks?”

The answer was Mediasite.

“I could take the electronic textbook that I was already using and embed short podcasts in between the various parts of the book. Finally, I could speak to my students before they came to class,” Nelson said. “As they come into the classroom, they’re ready to do much, much more.”

Mike Fisher, FCTL production manager, said the key to the university’s success with Mediasite is ensuring the proper support and services from FCTL.

Lora Hobbs, religion professor, regularly hears students say how much they like the accessibility and dynamic format of the lectures from any device through the university’s learning management system.

“Mediasite has completely transformed the toolkit of resources that I have available to me.”

This is part of a continuing series about our 2016 Enterprise Video Award finalists. The award program recognizes Mediasite users for revolutionizing video in their organizations. Winners will be announced during Unleash 2016, our Mediasite User Conference May 2-4 in Madison, Wis.
